If There Be Tomorrow

By: Yeayi Kobina

My body is a burial of hands that carried my name before its time.

I carry worlds I no longer hold memory to

Home used to be a welcome mat with grandma telling stories

Now it’s shrouded in words of enlightenment from the evening news.

I return home to a sense of emptiness

Never been sure of where I’m from

In dark about where I’m going

The time I have now is mine alone

For I have no history to pass on

Just stories of pagan religions

We don’t plant seeds anymore

For there is no one left who knows how to water it

If there be tomorrow, I leave no inheritance for history

Just a body that tried to fit in.
